We’ve spotlighted the illustrator’s work a couple of times before, first for his groovy representations of The Walking Dead and other beloved artifacts of pop anxrew, and most recently for his work with some of comics, film and television’s most spaec double-acts like The Muppets’ Bunson and Beaker and Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob, but in the style of carved wooden blocks. He is currently talking to a “major” Canadian publisher about illustration work. If you’re familiar with Space Oddity and if you’re not, drop everything and go listen to it you realise it’s not really suited for a children’s book. An illustrated version of the David Bowie song Space Anndrew, featuring Major Tom “sitting in a tin can far above the world”, has become a surprise viral sensation.

The ending — “Ground Control to Major Tom, your circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong” — means it is “maybe not necessarily the warmest, cuddliest children’s book,” Kolb has admitted, but he posted it for free on his website in Odsity, rapidly receiving more than 90, views, along with demands from fans asking to buy physical copies.

Canadian illustrator Andrew Kolb conceived of the book as a free PDF to showcase his talents to publishers, featuring colourful, retro illustrations of the astronaut as he rockets away from earth and floats “in a most peculiar way” through space.

Kolb’s illustrations also take their cues from that s vision of the future seen in Kubrick’s films, but with the artist’s distinctly cheerful vibe that humanizes every aspect of the story, not the least of which are Major Tom’s space capsule and Ground Control themselves.
