Ci so much of the book focused on the people and places of Rome, I would have liked some illustrations of the buildings, art, and portraits of the people that were at the center of these stories to bring them to life just that little bit extra. I enjoyed this book, but I didn’t enjoy all of it enough to really recommend it for someone who wasn’t going to be making a trip to the city soon. Maybe that’s because these overlap with Augias’ own lifetime and are therefore described more vividly, maybe because I didn’t have as much prior knowledge about Italy under fascism or during and after WWII. I found that the more recent chapters resonated most.
