A lot of pages are devoted to things that only vaguely have to do with training, like biographies of well know runners and their training schedules, some from the beginning of the 20th century or before hence the title: You will see a lot of pages the Kenyans, clothing, shoes, famous marathons etc.
Now, if you love running AND reading, this is the book for you! If you spend a lot of your time reading about running in magazines and over the internet, you are in the right place. The book is well written, informative, somber and scientific.
It is a reference textbook for runners. The best of its kind! Ok so this is a huge book, but you will get every question about running you could ever think about answered The bible for each runner.

Present for my son, who recommends it highly to aficionados! This is a great book but not a short read! Its a weighty book and more akin to a text book than a casual read.
I have dipped in and out of it and used it to look at specific issues – really lode. This book has a vast amount of information about all aspects of running and performance. It’s quite scientific and not one to try and read runhing to cover but there are lots of very interesting studies and ideas backed up with evidence.
If you’re looking for a book athat gives you one answer as to the best way to train, this isn’t it! The book outlines a number of different sometimes contradicting ways of achieving optimum performance and at the end of the day you just have to find out what works for you.
